Phone Number Report: I have received 6 calls in the past 2 weeks with a recording saying they are a debt collection agency and asking for someone who's name is unintelligible. I have had this tel number for 24 years.

Phone Number Report: Annoying recordings that say "IF YOU ARE NOT [some name] HANG UP THE PHONE NOW" are common. The caller is (or is pretending to be) a a debt collection agency. It is strange and unsettling to hear this abrupt warning. It's like bad dialogue from a TV cop show -- "STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE!" Why? What's going to happen if you don't? Is the phone going to blow up? No. This vaguely intimidating language is required by law [the TCPA, Telephone Consumer Protection Act] when collection agencies try to reach you with an auto-dialer. Commonly referred to as a "mini-Miranda," it is meant as legal protection for the collector against any privacy violation claims you might make later, just in case a third person hears this message about your personal business and you object.
