Caller Type: Debt Collector
Phone Number Report: Annoying recordings that say "IF YOU ARE NOT [some name] HANG UP THE PHONE NOW" are common. The caller is (or is pretending to be) a a debt collection agency. It is strange and unsettling to hear this abrupt warning. It's like bad dialogue from a TV cop show -- "STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE!" Why? What's going to happen if you don't? Is the phone going to blow up? No. This vaguely intimidating language is required by law [the TCPA, Telephone Consumer Protection Act] when collection agencies try to reach you with an auto-dialer. Commonly referred to as a "mini-Miranda," it is meant as legal protection for the collector against any privacy violation claims you might make later, just in case a third person hears this message about your personal business and you object. See (and hear) a good piece about this at vioptechchat.com. You can also easily find information about TCPA online. Now, move away...easy...that's right...don't try any funny business."
PS: Don't give out personal information of any kind to anyone you do not absolutely know. Sometimes "Phishing" crooks call, pretending to be debt collectors or legal agencies.
