Phone Number Report: I've been getting calls from these scammers for months. Here's the deal. They are using a caller ID spoofing device or service so there is NO way to find out who they are short of doing a call trace like the *57 feature with Verizon. But here's the kicker (aside from Verizon charging you a dollar every time you use the trace feature). The phone company will not reveal the result of the trace to you. They'll only reveal it to a law enforcement agency. Yeah, the phone company will protect the privacy of the scammer but not you.
The "Do Not Call" list with the FCC works great with legitimate telemarketers, not with these guys. According to the woman I spoke to in the Verizon Unlawful Call department many of these calls don't even originate in the US. They are coming from phone banks in Jamaica and Costa Rica.
Can you believe in this age of 9/11 paranoia that it is NOT illegal to fake your caller ID? Hell, some phone companies even offer the scammers the service that ALLOWS them to fake the ID.
